Rosamund Bartlett is a writer, translator and lecturer. A cultural historian with a background in Russian literature, music and art, her books include Wagner and Russia and Tolstoy: A Russian Life. She has also written a biography of Chekhov, and published translations of his short stories and letters. Her new translation of Anna Karenina was published in 2014.
Her current interests focus on Russian and European Modernism, opera, and the intersection between politics, history and the arts. She has lectured on these and other topics, including Tchaikovsky, Chekhov and Levitan, Matisse in Moscow, Kandinsky and The Blue Rider, and Modernist women artists, both in the UK and abroad.

A Trustee of the Anton Chekhov Foundation, a UK charity, she has overseen the "Anton Chekhov’s Garden" project and the "Early Chekhov Translation Project", which will result in the publication in November 2025 of Anton Chekhov, Earliest Stories
She regularly writes programme notes for concerts, opera and theatre productions, and contributes to broadcasts on the BBC. She is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford and currently Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford .
